In 2021, City of Newcastle launched NewiHub, a virtual ecosystem serving as a hub for local startups and entrepreneurs and a way to showcase some of the city’s innovative projects to a wider audience.

The council approached Civic Web Media to create new content in the form of interviews and syndicate articles to broaden the appeal of the site. In addition to this, we managed user submissions, interacted with new members and posted details of local events.

Interviews with local startup founders

Over the course of the year, Civic Web Media’s writers and freelance team conducted interviews with two core groups of people:

  • Successful founders from the Newcastle/Hunter region
  • Experts in areas of interest to entrepreneurs

Working with some of the best writers in Newcastle (including many of the Herald’s regular contributors), this project delivered in-depth stories and informative pieces that showcased what makes the city so special.

Some examples of the work produced:

Coassemble: Taking online training global from Newcastle (pdf)

SwimPro: The underwater camera making waves at the Olympics (pdf)

NewyTechPeople on hiring top talent in Newcastle (pdf)

Feedback Organic Recovery: Transforming organic waste into fresh veggies (pdf)

Showcasing Newcastle to the world

Over the course of this local government project, the site received more than 15,000 unique visits (96% from Australia). Of those, 89% were from the key markets of Newcastle and Sydney.

On average, the session duration (or dwell time) was more than three minutes, showing high engagement with the site, the majority of visits being to the homepage and custom articles.

More than 250 individuals, startups and coworking/maker spaces signed up to NewiHub in 2021, creating an ideal base for an EDM to supplement the council’s existing database.

Interesting stories from the startup world

Adam Spencer, the podcast creator for NewiHub, said “The NewiHub project was a great way to help get the word out about the amazing work being done here in Newcastle.”

“The team at Civic Web Media did an incredible job covering some of the most interesting stories from the startup world. The writers went above and beyond to find a mix of stories and I was blown away at what they discovered.”
